BIG GIGANTIC ROWDYTOWN 7 - 3D EXPERIENCE
In August 2018, production and lighting designer Ben Dalgleish wanted to introduce a totally new concept to the Big Gigantic live experience - 3D.
Black Lake was hired on to fully synchonize the 2 original shows played back to back. Assets created by 3D LIVE AXO were edited together, creating a total of 89 full videos, with over 60 in full steroscopic format.
In addition, only the innermost wall of the visual rig was 3D, leaving the exterior LED needing to be mapped and synchonized in a totally different format, sometimes using different content entirely. Together they created an incredibly dynamic visual experience.
RED ROCKS 2017
BIG GIGANTIC VISUAL DESIGN & SYNCHRONIZATION
In August 2017, production designer Ben Dalgleish approached Black Lake to assist in the development, organization, composition and final synchronization of Big Gigantic's 2017 fall tour's visuals. Black Lake helped find unique animators and artists to create one-of-a-kind visual assets, including Ori Toor, LotteZ Productions and Ehsan Parizi. In addition, we were commissioned to develop a precisely mapped 3D visual to introduce the group during the first night of Big Gigantic's "Rowdytown 6" shows at the Red Rocks venue in Colorado.
Black Lake ingested this content with Ben and began assigning varying assets and visual elements to over 30 songs, taking into consideration each songs feel and tempo. Colour profiles were selected to compliment Ben's lighting design and make the show cohesive and visually stunning.
3D CUBE "BUILD-OUT"
We were asked by Ben to create a visual that long-term fans would look at and think about how far they've come as a group. As is with all musical groups, careers start with humble beginnings. Big Gigantic used to tour a small cube design before they got to where they are today:
This was the inspiration for the 3D cube wall that was built to introduce the musicians to the stage at the Rowdytown 6 shows. We would create a cube design like this that would slowly reveal itself, but by many times larger in scale.
Using Cinema4d and Octane render, we animated boxes to morph or fly in to the scene in a snake-like fashion. From there we animated the boxes to flash orange light in a couple different patterns, giving Ben some options when cuing the visual live. Here are a few .GIFs to demonstrate how they turned out:
